⁣Më 7 prill 1939, në agimin e një dite që do të ndryshonte përgjithmonë fatin e vendit, forcat fashiste të Italy, nën urdhrat e Benito Mussolini, nisën pushtimin ushtarak të Albania. Sulmi erdhi pas muajsh presioni politik dhe ekonomik, ndërsa mbretëria shqiptare, e udhëhequr nga Zog I, u përball me një nga momentet më të errëta të historisë së saj.
Në portet e Durrës, Vlorë, Shëngjin dhe Sarandë, ushtarët shqiptarë dhe civilët rezistuan me guxim përballë një force shumëfish më të madhe. Figura si Mujo Ulqinaku u kthyen në simbol të qëndresës kombëtare.
Brenda pak orësh, Shqipëria ra nën pushtimin italian, duke hyrë në një periudhë të errët okupimi që do të zgjaste deri në fundin e World War II.
